House Alveston has sat the throne for generations, ushering in, some time ago, an age of peace and prosperity. The listless comfort that the people of Ulrich have grown accustomed to is now threatened, and the high houses grow more restless with each passing day. The King Byren has died of illness, having failed to produce a child in his short reign. With Byren having no siblings, and no children, Sergonia lacks an heir apparent, leaving the throne vulnerable and cold. Even though there is no clear heir to the Sergonian throne, the heirs presumptive are numerous and can be found in every high house. In order to prevent unneeded conflict, Byren’s chief advisor, Rhedus, was chosen to rule while the proper successor was decided upon. It has been nearly a year, and there are whispers that suggest there will be no exchange of the throne. Rhedus has grown comfortable, has appointed his own advisors, and, according to rumors, has halted the search for a proper heir. Speculation is not enough to move the council to action, however, and the bickering amongst the high houses keeps eyes focused elsewhere.
